【Plain】:Addiction to painkillers. A toothache, but instead of seeing a dentist to fill the cavity, you pop painkillers every day. Short-term it doesn't hurt, but the tooth decays deeper and deeper — eventually it has to be pulled out entirely, and you've wrecked your body in the process.
【Workplace failure scene】:Code keeps shipping bugs. The engineering lead, wanting quick relief, slaps on a patch (symptom-relief). Over time, nobody bothers to refactor the messy underlying architecture (root-cause solution). Patches stack on patches, bugs multiply, development efficiency collapses like an avalanche.
【Breakout】:Brace yourself and stop the temporary Band-Aid — even if short-term progress slows. Relentlessly commit more than 50% of resources to root-cause structural refactoring, and build a safe exit mechanism from the symptom-relief dependency.
【Theory】:During a period of rapid growth (positive feedback), people naively assume the growth will continue without limit. But fast growth eventually hits a physical ceiling, capacity bottleneck, or institutional constraint (negative feedback), causing a cliff-style stall or reversal.
【Plain】:No pig flies forever. The harder you step on the gas, the bigger the wind resistance — until drag equals horsepower, the car can't go any faster, and it might just blow its engine.
【Workplace failure scene】:One of Plant 2's new products goes viral; the business line throws money at ads and recruiters (growth). The back-office production, supply chain, customer service and shipping all overload (bottleneck), complaints spike, customers churn in droves, and sales collapse.
【Breakout】:During the gravy years of growth, never pour all the money into expanding sales. Pre-invest in supply-chain upgrades, back-office flow self-healing, and other "limiting factors."
【Theory】:Multiple parties, each acting out of self-protection, take "defensive escalation" measures. Their opponent reads these moves as major boundary violations, triggering spirals of escalation — until the system's total resources are completely exhausted.
【Plain】:Old Wang next door buys a guard dog to keep out thieves. You're scared, so you put up a 2-meter barbed-wire fence. He sees that, thinks you're out to get him, and immediately buys a security camera pointed at you. Mutual suspicion and defense — both stay paranoid, and both go broke.
【Workplace failure scene】:Plant 2 and a competitor fight over the same big customer. The rival cuts prices 10% (defensive); Plant 2 bites back with 15%. The rival ups subsidy to 20%... a few rounds later, both profit floors are shattered and both are selling at a loss.
【Breakout】:One side's leadership must show political wisdom and courage, unilaterally extend an "olive branch," raise the dimension of competition, focus on different differentiated niches, and break the head-on confrontation.
【Theory】:Two similar activities or businesses compete for a limited share of resources. One of them gains a slight edge through luck or first-mover advantage, and decision-makers dump all resources into it. The other dries up and dies — even if it had great potential.
【Plain】:Playing favorites. Two kids: the older one scores slightly higher on the final exam, so the parents pour all the treats, toys, and tutoring into the elder. The younger is left to fend for himself. Eventually the younger goes off the rails and the elder cracks under the pressure too.
【Workplace failure scene】:Inside Plant 2, two new production processes A and B are under development. A delivers results fast, so the company pours R&D budget and senior engineers into A. B is paused for lack of money. Years later, the market is saturated with the fast-but-aging A process, and B — the future — has been entirely lost to Plant 2.
【Breakout】:Decision-makers must overcome the instinct to reward the current winner and, with the future in mind, set up protected zones and hard-budget isolation for the potential-but-currently-lagging group.
【Theory】:Multiple stakeholders jointly depend on and consume a free common resource (the commons). At first each one extracts as much as possible to maximize their own profit — until the resource collapses under overuse and everyone loses the means to survive.
【Plain】:The pasture is village property anyway — why not graze on it? Everyone adds a few extra sheep; the sheep devour the grass roots; next year all the sheep in the village starve.
【Workplace failure scene】:Several business units in Plant 2 share one common dev-support team. To boost their own KPIs, every group tags their requests as "Urgent-AAA" and squeezes the devs dry. Eventually the devs burn out and resign en masse, paralyzing every business unit.
【Breakout】:Build quota, pricing, or queuing mechanisms for the common resource so heavy users bear the marginal cost.
【Theory】:When actual performance falls hopelessly short of a high goal, the system doesn't try to lift its own capability to close the gap; instead it keeps compromising and lowering the goal to manufacture an "everything is fine" illusion — leading to a long, hidden decline.
【Plain】:Can't get into a top university? Just lower the goal to a vocational college. Can't get into that either? Tell yourself "the school of hard knocks builds character." Every time you hit a wall, move the line down — until you're flat on your back.
【Workplace failure scene】:Plant 2 sets a goal of "100% on-time delivery." Month one: only 80%. The manager doesn't optimize line coordination but says "100% is unrealistic given market causes, let's make it 90%." Month two: 70%. Change the goal to 75%... eventually on-time delivery is meaningless, and the big customers all walk.
【Breakout】:Lock the highest standard and refuse to compromise. Goal-setting and oversight must be handed to a neutral external team that is not directly evaluated by the same effect — break the internal self-compromise loop.
【Theory】:A quick-relief fix against a problem may look successful in the short run. But without long-term perspective, the fix triggers hidden and severe delayed side effects that feed back into the original problem, making it even worse than at the start.

The GM thinks "this is just a temporary windfall" and refuses to spend on automated sorting lines. Mis-shipment rates then spike, customers return goods and leave. 【Breakout】:If the growth is real, you must lock onto the core customer-experience floor (delivery, yield, etc.), treat those floors as "hard red lines," and front-load heavy-asset investment.
【Theory】:Two parties that were naturally symbiotic allies in the system, perfectly capable of cooperating. But each, focused on solving its own local problem and pursuing departmental interest, inadvertently hurts the other — until the relationship sours and they become a draining pair of opponents.
【Plain】:The flood crashed into the Dragon King's own temple. Family members fighting each other, tripping each other up, pulling ladders away — outsiders laugh and walk off with the prize.
【Workplace failure scene】:Marketing throws money at discount campaigns to drive traffic (for their KPIs), causing after-sales customer service to be buried in complaints and returns. Customer service retaliates with ultra-long review bottlenecks, which makes marketing lose customers. At weekly meetings the two sides pound the table and shout at each other — no one aligns on the core conversion rate.
【Breakout】:Tear down the silos! Top leadership must establish a shared cross-department KPI (e.g., joint net profit) and stop measuring only local cost and output.
【Theory】:When the system tries to self-regulate toward a goal through negative feedback, a significant "time delay" in the feedback loop causes the regulator to over-react impatiently — the system oscillates violently and cannot settle into a stable state.
【Plain】:Adjusting the shower temperature. Water's cold — crank it hard to hot; ten seconds later it hasn't warmed up (delay), can't wait, swing it to the hottest setting. Another ten seconds, it scalds you, slam it to coldest. All night long, ice and fire.
【Workplace failure scene】:Plant 2 HR notices a shortage of technical talent. Because hiring/onboarding/training has a 3-month delay, HR can't wait and frantically pushes headhunters and posts everywhere (over-reaction). Three months later, a flood of new hires pass the filter all at once; headcount instantly overshoots, training collapses, and HR has to start a miserable probation-period layoff.
【Breakout】:In systems with delays, decision-makers must show extraordinary patience. After firing the first wave of action, force a silent wait for the response period — or use digital tools to physically shorten the information feedback delay.
【Plain】:Tweak numbers, change metrics, add a little performance bonus. Easiest to operate, but has near-zero effect on the system's long-term habits.
【Scenario】:Employees aren't keen enough to work overtime? Just bump the overtime rate by 10% (change the number).
【Plain】:Build a buffer pool. Add extra inventory and spare parts to absorb external volatility. Higher cost.
【Scenario】:Worried about logistics hiccups delaying Plant 2 assembly? Just double the buffer stock in the spare-parts warehouse (change the buffer).
【Plain】:Rebuild the plant, buy new machines, widen the roads. Major construction: huge action and cost, but once built it is hard to change again.
【Scenario】:The old workshop keeps getting jammed up — tear down the physical walls and rebuild as a barrier-free flow path (change the physical flow).
【Plain】:Info travels too slowly — by the time it arrives, the moment has passed. Shorten approval chains, speed up reporting, kill the wait delays.
【Scenario】:Workshop anomalies used to take a full week to flow up; now DingTalk pushes them to the factory director in one minute.
【Plain】:Make the brake more sensitive. Before the system drifts off course, pull it back quickly and forcefully.
【Scenario】:As soon as the process defect rate exceeds 0.5%, smart red lights flash and the line automatically trips to emergency stop.
【Plain】:Turn off the accelerator, rein in the frenzy. Stop runaway Matthew effects, give a hand to the laggards.

【Plain】:Formless wins against form. Never worship any single theory or framework as the absolute truth. Stay utterly empty — cling to nothing about the system's current state. Unbound and unconstrained, adapt on the fly.
